Designer Malena Kaplan helps the D.C. couple create a sophisticated retreat with modern furniture, red accents and a decluttered office space.Kaplan, of One Pretty House Interiors (301-657-9795,, is based in Bethesda.

Start with a warm gray backdrop that complements taupe and beige furniture. Use Benjamin Moore’s Chelsea Gray.

A mix of materials and finishes, including metal and wood, gives the space a contemporary look that isn’t too harsh.

Declutter the office nook with a new desk and bookself (not pictured) for essential items, and a rolling chair for flexible seating.

Carry red into the sleeping area for a cohesive look, but don’t go overboard. Pair red pillows with more neutral bedding.

In a bright room with cathedral ceilings, manage light with new shades and floor-length drapery panels.
